Gold filled jewelry comes in different variations, each having unique features and properties. When searching online for Gold Filled jewelry, you may not find the quality you are looking for, because different markets have different standards of Gold Filled. Here is a little guide to help you identify different types Gold Filled and ensure you get what you’re looking for!
14K Gold Filled (USA)
US Gold Filled is strictly what we use at DE.FINE for our Gold Filled Jewelry, which is 14k gold and a base metal, usually jeweler's brass, with a thick gold layer that weighs 5% or 1/20th of the total weight that is heat bounded allowing for it’s waterproof and tarnish resistant elements. It is strictly regulated to ensure consistent quality and thickness. Out of all Gold Filled variations, USA Gold Filled has the highest quality of them all and is highly recommended! Production capabilities and designs are limited due to requiring proper machinery, which makes it more unique & handmade!
Pros: Water safe, Tarnish Resistant, Long-lasting, Hypoallergenic, Nickel-free, Affordable
Cons: Eventually it can tarnish, as it’s not solid gold. With minimal care, typically pieces can last for many years with everyday wear.
18K Gold Filled (Brazilian)
Brazilian Gold Filled, on the other hand, is more widely available and has an 18k gold layer that is 3% or 1/30th of the total weight, and has 40% less gold than USA Gold Filled and may use different base metals like copper or nickel. It has lower quality control standards than US Gold Filled.
Pros: Water safe, Tarnish Resistant Hypoallergenic, Nickel-free, Affordable
Cons: Will tarnish quicker than USA Gold Filled as it has 40% less solid gold and will require more care.
Asian Gold Filled
is made in Asia and uses 12k or 14k gold layer bonded to a base metal using different methods such as electroplating or mechanical bonding. It may not have as much quality control as US Gold Filled, and the gold layer may vary in thickness.
Pros: Water safe, Tarnish Resistant Hypoallergenic, Nickel-free, Affordable Cons: Will tarnish quicker than USA Gold Filled as it has 40% less solid gold and will require more care. Not regulated so it’s difficult to ensure the quality.
Rolled Gold
a vintage jewelry option, has a 12k or 14k gold layer bonded to a base metal using heat and pressure, with a gold layer that weighs 2.5% or 1/40th of the total weight.
Ultimately, choosing between the types depends on personal preference for durability and how you choose to wear it. US Gold Filled and Italian Gold Filled are generally of higher quality, while Brazilian Gold Filled and Asian Gold Filled are more affordable.
At DE.FINE, the Gold Filled we work with is only 14K USA Gold Filled, ensuring the best quality and the best alternative to solid gold. Our mission is to bring you long-lasting jewelry that doesn’t break the bank.
